Our Approach

Our approach fosters positive change and personal growth through shared musical experiences, helping clients develop communication, emotional resilience, and wellbeing. While much of our current work is rooted in education, our practice spans the entire lifespan—from early childhood to older adulthood.

Meet our Team

Inscape Therapies is led by Brian Smith, Founder and Director, and the only AVPT (Austin Vocal Psychotherapist) in the region—trained in a pioneering method developed by Dr. Diane Austin in New York. This approach combines depth psychology and vocal sound to support emotional expression, trauma integration, and meaningful connection.

We uphold the highest clinical standards through rigorous quality assurance, ethical practice, and continuous professional development. At Inscape Therapies, we believe in the transformative power of music to support every person’s journey toward growth, expression, and connection.

Brian Smith

Founder & Director

Consultant Music Therapist & Vocal Psychotherapist

HCPC Registered: Reg No. AS01452

Brian Smith is an HCPC-registered Music Therapist with 28 years of full-time clinical experience, working with individuals and groups across the lifespan. He is the Founder and Director of Inscape Therapies, where he brings a deep commitment to person-centred care and the transformative power of music.

Brian began his career at Dartington College of Arts, studying Music Performance and Arts Management, and completed his Music Therapy training at Anglia Ruskin University in 1999. He went on to develop a pioneering music therapy service in Northern Ireland before relocating to Scotland in 2001. Since then, he has supported clients with autism, brain injuries, trauma, mental health challenges, complex needs, and young people in palliative care—across education, healthcare, and community settings.

In 2005, Brian completed the Foundation Year at the Institute of Group Analysis (Glasgow), enriching his work with individuals and groups through a deeper understanding of group dynamics and relational processes.

In 2018, Brian’s work was featured in Letter to Louis, a critically acclaimed memoir by Alison White that explores the complexities of raising a child with profound disabilities. His contribution is highlighted as part of the therapeutic support that helped shape Louis’s journey, with music therapy enriching not only Louis’s life but also the emotional and relational wellbeing of his entire family. The book was later adapted into a radio drama for BBC Radio 4 Extra, further amplifying its message and the significance of Brian’s work in the narrative.

Brian’s therapeutic approach is rooted in empathy, creativity, and a belief in music’s ability to foster connection, expression, and healing. He continues to advocate for inclusive access to music therapy and collaborates with schools, charities, and healthcare providers to develop innovative, arts-based interventions that support emotional wellbeing and personal growth.
